Boston Airport Tests New Behavior Detection Program

By admin in Criminal Background Check, Interrogation, Investigations, Security, Terrorism at August 2nd, 2011 | No comments

A new level of security imposed by the TSA at the Boston Logan International Airport will be enforced Tuesday. Behavior Detection officers (BDOs) will ask a few questions and look for anomalies in every traveler passing through Logan’s Terminal A, TSA spokesperson Greg Soule told msnbc.com. “Officers are trained to look for specific behaviors that would indicate if an individual is acting suspicious and has a fear of discovery,” he said.

This pilot program is “modeled after a number of behavior-detection programs used by other security and law-enforcement agencies, but tailored to TSA’s specific mission.” The officers will receive both classroom and on-the-job training.

The agency “will evaluate how the program will impact security, screening operations and passenger through-put,” Soule said. If deemed a success, the pilot program could expand to other airports by this fall.

Its success is predetermined by the fact that security can look people in the eye and communicate with them instead of inspecting them through a machine.

TSA informed the flying public of the pilot program with signs in front of the affected airport checkpoint and through a local media event held on Monday.

Since the late 1980′s, Rafael Mora-Lopez has been illegally residing in Anchorage, Alaska with another man’s identity. The strange part is that he has been employed as a legal U.S. cop since 2005. The man known as Rafael Espinoza was widely respected as an exemplary police officer who was popular among his peers in Alaska’s largest city. “The problem, obviously, is he is not Rafael Espinoza,” says Anchorage Police Chief Mark Mew. The real Rafael Espinoza is a U.S. citizen who lives outside Alaska.

Soon after the announcement last month, Mora-Lopez appeared in U.S. District Court in Anchorage and pleaded not guilty to a charge of passport fraud, which carries a maximum 10-year sentence. Federal agents processing a renewal request for his passport discovered the alleged fraud. He was taken into custody after authorities searched his home and found documents confirming his true identity, officials said. Read the full article »

Attorney-Client Privilege? Not at Work.

attorney_clientBefore writing an email to your attorney, think twice about the repercussions. First of all, as everyone should know by now, once something is released into cyberspace, it’s in cyberspace forever. This includes text messages, chats, emails, pictures, social media conversations, video, and etc.  Second,  the majority of  our time is spent working for a business; and if it’s a job where we access business resources, recognize that these resources are regulated and controlled by…? The business owners, employers, managers, etc.

On Thursday, Sacramento Third Appellate District court ruled that attorney-client privilege is no longer sacrosanct if the communication was between the two parties from the client’s work email address. The decision was unanimous. This means that if you’re going to sue anyone–and especially your employer–do not communicate with an attorney using company resources. The company has the right, because they own the communication device, to use it against you in a court of law. Read the full article »

SmartphoneInterGuard is a new Blackberry security software that allows employers to keep sensitive information from being publicized (by design or accident) and also ensure employee’s are where they’re supposed to be when they’re supposed to be there. Designed by Awareness Technologies, the Interguard software will monitor activity on work BlackBerry’s & computers.

According to VerticalNews, the CEO of Awareness Technologies stated that there are “over 50 million BlackBerry subscribers worldwide, many of whom use their devices for work.”  He also announced plans in 2011 for similar software applications that will work with the Android and iPhone platforms.

Using Interguard, employers can conduct surveillance on digital communications, monitoring content for every email sent and received by employees, and the parties with which employees are communicating. Once installed, the service is instantly implemented, allowing companies like insurance agencies and legal firms to protect themselves.

The software will also work on computers, monitoring all sites visited, emails, instant messages, and social network interaction. According to the article, Interguard is “mission-critical” in regulated industries (financial services is the example cited). Financial-type businesses usually own some sort of monitoring software for computers, but Interguard is bridging the gap to smartphones due to their explosive growth.

In such cases, the technology is available legally because the equipment is owned by the company; in most cases, employees usually sign a waiver stating that they were informed of the monitoring.
