Don’t Be a Dummy…… Camera

By Dawn in Burlary, Crime, MSI Detective Services, robbery, Safety, Security, Technology at November 7th, 2011 | No comments

Well here is a huge problem. You need a deterrent at your home or work and cannot afford a full blown security camera system due to economic conditions. Join the crowd! Crime is up and money is down and the bad guys are eying your place as a target. There are plenty of low cost video security systems available as well as some really cheap options that may scare away the bad guys.

Dummy cameras are a good option as long as you follow a few rules. First of all, some of our customers have heard a rumor that dummy cameras are illegal. I am not sure how that rumor started, but I do know there have been law suits pertaining to companies setting up dummy cameras where the plaintiff claimed a false sense of security. This has happened in situations where a person thinks they are being monitored while being a victim of a crime -not often but this can happen. You can also get sued for giving a person a dirty look but that’s another story for a frivolous lawsuit lawyer to explain. Cyberstalking is increasingly becoming a common crime in today’s world of the use of the internet. Conducting an investigation into this type of crime may be new to many investigators and law enforcement. Here are some steps to follow to assist investigators, law enforcement or you – if you are a victim of this type of crime – as you will need to know what type of information to document to assist in tracking down the perpetrator. This form of harassment should be taken as seriously as any other crime.

The Preliminary Investigation
After the law enforcement officer or investigator determines this is indeed a cyberstalking case, he or she should initiate a preliminary criminal investigation. Smartphone Pictures Pose Security and Privacy Risks – You Tube Video

By Dawn in gps, gps tracker, invasion of privacy, MSI Detective Services, Safety, stalking, Technology at October 3rd, 2011 | No comments

I found this story very interesting because I just learned through watching a crime show program that the location of pictures taken on your smartphone give the GPS location where the picture was taken. On the crime show, a kidnapper was caught because he snapped a “proof of life” photo of his victim and sent it to authorities. The investigators were savvy enough to know you could find the GPS location of where the picture was taken. As a result, they were able to track down the kidnapper and save the young missing girl.

The above example is a case of where this type of technology helped catch a criminal, but unfortunately, this technology is being used by criminals for stalking purposes and for child predators to locate the places where a particular child plays, eats, etc.

The following video will tell you how to turn off this feature on your phone BEFORE you snap that picture. You can then turn your GPS feature back on after the picture has been taken.

Chicago to Make Public a Decade of Crimes

By Dawn in Chicago, Crime, MSI Detective Services, Politics, Safety at September 19th, 2011 | No comments

Long a city with a reputation for withholding information, Chicago now wants to make public every crime over the past 10 years — a highly unusual move among the nation’s major police departments.

Millions of crime statistics dating to 2001 will be posted online in a searchable database, slated for a Wednesday launch, although a police press official told msnbc.com that could be delayed. It will be updated daily, providing fodder for residents to evaluate their own neighborhoods, academics to study crime and techie types to create websites or apps.

The release is the latest attempt by the administration of Mayor Rahm Emanuel, who took office in May, to make city dealings more open and counter Chicago’s reputation for entrenched systemic corruption and backroom deals. Chicago officials recently posted online the salaries of city employees, city contracts and lobbying data, with more information expected in coming months.

“It’s a whole new era of openness and transparency,” said Brett Goldstein, the city’s chief data officer and former police officer. “You determine your own analysis.” Read the full article »
