There have been a recent series of theft allegations against TSA employees.

One such case involves Agent Clayton Keith Dovel who was arrested last week on suspicion of stealing numerous iPads from passenger’s luggage at DFW’s airport.

It appears Dovel was stealing the iPads from his position where he screened passenger’s checked luggage by hand.

Due to the smarts of one victim, Dovel was caught because the victim had downloaded the “Find My iPhone” app onto her iPad. She was able to track her stolen iPad directly to Dovel’s house where police found at least seven iPads at Dovel’s home.

Dovel has been placed on leave until officials can further investigate the situation.

I think video surveillance cameras should be installed in the area where luggage is checked. This would catch those who are stealing, although I am sure most TSA employees are honest, hard working individuals.

Video surveillance in the screening area at John F. Kennedy International Airport recently helped catch a TSA agent who stole $5,000 from a passenger’s jacket. The surveillance video showed TSA agent Alexandra Schmid taking the money from a jacket pocket, wrapping the cash in a plastic glove and taking it to a bathroom.

The money hasn’t been recovered and police are investigating whether Schmid gave it to another person in the bathroom.

Schmid, age 31, was arrested on a charge of grand larceny and suspended pending an investigation.

It is best to never check items of value in your luggage and to check for your valuables after they have gone through the passenger screening area. If you must check your computers, there are software programs for Macs and PCs that will track your computer should it be lost or stolen.

7 Teens Charged in Beating Posted on YouTube

By Dawn in Chicago, Crime, Investigations, MSI Detective Services, robbery, Stolen Property, Violence at January 19th, 2012 | No comments

Seven teenagers were charged yesterday morning for an attack and robbery of another teenager on Chicago’s south side. The attack was caught on video and went viral on YouTube.

The attack took place around 4:00 p.m. on Sunday in an alley behind an elementary school. Six boys and a 15-year-old girl are accused of participating in the beating and robbery of a 17-year-old male.

Only one of the attacker’s names is being released because he is the only one in the group who can be charged as an adult. He is 17 year-old Raymond Palomino, a student at Kelly High School. He is being charged with robbery and aggravated battery.

The other six attackers – two 16-year-old boys, three 15-year-old boys and the 15-year-old girl — were charged as juveniles, also with one count of robbery and one count of aggravated battery. Their names were not released due to their ages.

The video posted online shows five males kicking and punching the victim while taunting him with racial slurs. The victim was eventually able to run away. He was taken to a local hospital where he was treated and released.

Items stolen from the victim were a pair of gym shoes, a wallet and cash.

Although the victim is of Asian descent according to The Associated Press, police say the crime does not appear to have been racially motivated. Read the full article »

Hand in the Cookie Jar: Girl Scout Official Plundered $311,000

By Dawn in Crime, MSI Detective Services, Stolen Property, Theft Investigations at January 13th, 2012 | No comments

Talk about getting caught with your hand in the cookie jar.

A former finance director at the Girl Scout Council of Greater New York admitted on Tuesday to stealing more than $300,000 from the organization. She is Yaasmin Hooey, 35, of Manhattan.

That’s enough for more than 80,000 boxes of Tagalongs (Peanut Butter Patties). But Hooey wasn’t buying cookies. Instead, she was spending the money on cruises, cosmetic laser procedures and a $13,000 diamond ring. She also spent $18,000 in bars and restaurants, according to the District Attorney’s Office. Life is not going to be so luxurious behind prison bars.

She plead guilty to second-degree grand larceny. Hooey admitted stealing $311,568 between September 2008 and December 2010. “She began stealing from the non-profit as soon as she began working for them,”  said assistant district attorney Lauren Littman.

Hooey admitted forging the signature of the organization’s then-chief executive and writing 65 checks to herself from a payroll account. Nine wire transfers also moved money from two of the nonprofit’s bank accounts to Hooey’s own account.

In addition to spending the stolen money on luxury items, she used some of the money for “personal expenses” including groceries, a gym membership, clothing, and commuter train tickets.

She will be sentenced in the New York Supreme Court on March 6.

Two stolen taxicabs were located and one robbery suspect was captured because GPS tracking devices were installed on the taxicabs.

Stolen Taxicab Tracked in Denver

In the first incident, a man was arrested in Denver, CO this past Wednesday after law enforcement officials said he stole a taxi, robbed a convenience store and then led police officers on a chase that ended when he crashed the cab into a tree in a park.

The suspect stole an orange Union Taxi mini-van and then drove it to the Diamond Shamrock convenience store at around 1 a.m., according to a local police report.

The man robbed the convenience store and then took off in the stolen cab. The taxi was equipped with a GPS tracking device, allowing police to track the precise location of the vehicle. The suspect led officers on a chase. The chase ended with the cab going off the street and onto a sidewalk, where he then smashed into a tree near downtown Denver.

The police took the man into custody and the suspect was taken to a hospital to have his injuries checked out.

Stolen Taxicab Found in San Antonio

In a similar incident, a cab driver had his taxi stolen from him at gunpoint in San Antonio, TX.

Cesar Alvarez told police he picked up a fare at a motel around 6:30 a.m. Wednesday morning. After driving the man to his destination, he found himself staring into the barrel of a gun. Read the full article »
