Gift Ruse Lures More Than 100 Fugitives into Custody

By Dawn in Investigations, Wanted at October 6th, 2011 | No comments

The promise of free electronic devices lured more than 100 fugitives into the custody of waiting Cook County Sheriff’s officers during a two-week ruse operation.

The ruse, dubbed “Operation C.W. Marketing” resulted in the arrest of more than 100 fugitives, according to a release from the sheriff’s office. Those arrested ranged in age from 19 to 66 years old and were wanted for violent felonies, unpaid child support, traffic offenses and other charges.

During the two-week operation, fugitives were invited to a Cook County warehouse to test various electronic devices, which they believed they could keep after completing a survey, according to the release.

Among those arrested included a fugitive who took a bus from Wisconsin and a man who sprinted several blocks to waiting authorities because he was late for the appointment, the release said.

More than 45,000 fugitives are wanted in Cook County, the release said. Officials have used fugitives’ last known addresses to try to lure them into other recent operations as well, some of which included promises of holiday shopping certificates or a refund of owed federal stimulus money.

Anonymous tips based on fugitive information the sheriff’s office posted online have also led to dozens of arrests and tips on other criminal activities, according to the release.

Sheriff Tom Dart held a press conference on Tuesday to speak about the operation.

Carpet Salesman Leads Hunt for Gadhafi

By Dawn in MSI Detective Services, Politics, Wanted at September 14th, 2011 | No comments

Three weeks after Libyan dictator Moammar Gadhafi was driven out of Tripoli, effectively ending his 42-year reign, his would-be successor addressed a cheering crowd of thousands in what used to be called Green Square, the now renamed Martyrs’ Square.

“We seek a state of law and prosperity,” said Mustafa Abdul Jalil, the interim head of the anti-Gadhafi forces’ National Transitional Council. The interim government has been recognized by scores of other countries as Libya’s new governing authority.

“To anyone who harmed the Libyan people in any way,” he intoned, “we need the courts… the judicial system… to decide.” With that there were more fireworks, a crescendo of shouted acclamation.

Unfortunately, no one, including Abdul Jalil, has proclaimed a “declaration of liberation.” The civil war isn’t over, and  won’t be over until one question on the minds of all Libyans is answered: “Where is Gadhafi?” Read the full article »

FBI has possible lead to 1971 skyjacker

By alisa in Crime, Investigations, Missing Persons Investigations, Wanted at August 1st, 2011 | No comments

In 1971 a man hijacked a U.S. passenger plane with a bomb threat and was given $200,000 in ransom money. After the plane landed and passengers were exchanged for parachutes it took off again with the hijacker and the flight crew on board, heading toward Mexico. Not long after takeoff, the man managed to jump out of the cockpit and vanished into the strong winds and freezing rain 10,000 feet over Washington state.

4 decades later, the FBI believes they may have found a lead to who the man is. Dubbed as D.B Cooper, the hijacker left behind magazines which were examined for fingerprints.

“Yes, there is a lead in this matter that’s being pursued,” Gutt told Reuters. “It’s someone who surfaced who hasn’t surfaced before. It came from someone who’s close to someone who is deceased. So far, we haven’t been able to dismiss it.” Read the full article »

Man taunts cops via Facebook; arrested in front of computer

By alisa in harassment, Wanted at July 29th, 2011 | No comments

29-year-old Victor Burgos still had his Facebook page open when a task force of U.S. marshals and NYPD detectives arrived at his Brooklyn apartment. The man was placed under arrest and taken to Oneida County where he is facing charges related to domestic violence and harassment of his ex-girlfriend.

Before his arrest, Burgos posted messages via Facebook such as “Catch me if you can, I’m in Brooklyn,” and he even posted a video of him walking into an unidentified NYPD stationhouse.

There’s no explanation as to what Burgos’ motivation was and whether he genuinely believed that he could continue with his online antics without getting caught eventually. All Utica police sergeant Steve Hauck had to say about the incident is that “He told us via Facebook to come and get him and we did.”
