Safe Lighting
Make sure each walkway and porch is lit up with bright lights.

Locking Up

Check for working locks on all windows, sliding doors, garage/shed doors, and any other doors to the outside. After locking up, be sure that everyone living in the home can easily open all locks from inside. Deadbolt locks that lock with an inside key are hazerdous; if a fire started, a missing key could trap you inside. Replace any locks with indoor keys to “thumb turn” deadbolt locks that are easily reachable for everyone in the household. Window locks should open easily from inside. If you have security bars on doors or windows, it’s important to have a “quick-release” latch that would make it easy to get out in an emergency. Everyone in your family should know how to use the latch.

Make your home intruder-proof

Disable burglars from hiding by keeping bushes and shrubs trimmed under windows. Store ladders, tools, and other equipment in a locked shed or garage so intruders can’t use them as burglar tools. Cover garage and shed windows with shades. After dark, cover your home windows with shades as well.

When You’re Away for a Few Days

Make your house look as if someone is still there. Maintain the yard right before leaving. Have a close friend or family member bring in your mail and newspapers.
