Don’t Be a Dummy…… Camera

By Dawn in Burlary, Crime, MSI Detective Services, robbery, Safety, Security, Technology at November 7th, 2011 | No comments

Well here is a huge problem. You need a deterrent at your home or work and cannot afford a full blown security camera system due to economic conditions. Join the crowd! Crime is up and money is down and the bad guys are eying your place as a target. There are plenty of low cost video security systems available as well as some really cheap options that may scare away the bad guys.

Dummy cameras are a good option as long as you follow a few rules. First of all, some of our customers have heard a rumor that dummy cameras are illegal. I am not sure how that rumor started, but I do know there have been law suits pertaining to companies setting up dummy cameras where the plaintiff claimed a false sense of security. This has happened in situations where a person thinks they are being monitored while being a victim of a crime -not often but this can happen. You can also get sued for giving a person a dirty look but that’s another story for a frivolous lawsuit lawyer to explain. Setting Up a Remote Surveillance Camera Without a Power Source

By Dawn in eavesdropping, hidden cameras at September 22nd, 2011 | No comments

Ever wanted to set up a remote surveillance setup in the woods or the rural area where you cannot plug a camera into a wall socket?  Here is a list of things you will need to make it work.

·  Waterproof Box to keep all the goodies.  The bigger the better for air circulation as well as making sure things don’t get cramped inside.  I have even used Rubbermaid tubs.  You can punch a couple holes for air as long as they are not too exposed to sideways rain.  Or just punch the holes and watch the weather.  If it rains, you may want to check on your equipment.

·  Wireless Cellular Internet such as Clear.  They are very good.  Be sure to make sure they are not blocking ports.  You may need to upgrade the service to make sure they are not blocking.  Someone mentioned they are starting to block ports (you need some open ports to allow the video to be seen remotely) so be sure to check.  Verizon is also good but pricier.  Check the coverage map before you buy to make sure that the area you are setting up has coverage.  4G is better than 3G but either works.

·  IP Camera or Analog Camera using a Video Server aka Video Encoder.  Or use an analog camera with DVR that allows remote access.  The DVR will drain more battery but the upside is that it will record too.  The Video Encoder does allow remote recording on a PC with the included software.

·  Battery to supply power to all units.  You may need to calculate – best are Marine Batteries for the longest lasting.

·  Power inverter to change the DC battery current to AC for the encoder and power supplies to work.  Unless you can make things work with the DC from the battery direct.  This will depend on your equipment.

·  Wires and connectors.

·  Configuration of all the items including port forwarding on the router to allow viewing and or recording remotely.

You can get an idea of pricing for most of these items on our website for surveillance equipment at www.uspystore.com. Use our Product Finder to search for specific items.

Good luck!

Camera Lens Mysteriously Falls from Sky, Damages Roof

By Rosa Golijan

It’s a bird! No, it’s a plane! No, it’s … a camera lens?

Imagine how surprised the folks in Petaluma, California must’ve been when they realized that it was a Canon camera lens which left a hole in a resident’s home recently.

According to Mercury News, 55-year-old Debbie Payne’s neighbor heard a loud noise near the woman’s home a few weeks ago. When he stepped out to help Payne investigate the source of the ruckus, the two discovered that the roof of her two-story home had a hole and that two window screens were sliced open.

And the culprit? Why, it was just sitting right there — in the neighbor’s driveway.

It was a two-pound nine-inch Canon camera lens — and no one knows how or why it fell from the sky.

Petaluma police are attempting to track down the device’s owner using its serial number and questioning whether it was possible that someone dropped the lens out of a plane.

It’s worth noting that “FAA spokesman Ian Gregor told NBC he had never heard of a camera lens falling from an aircraft, adding that simply proving it came from a plane would be difficult to do.”

Spy Camera Found in Michigan on Man’s Property

By Dawn in hidden cameras, invasion of privacy, MSI Detective Services, Privacy, Private Investigator at September 20th, 2011 | No comments

An Addison Township, Michigan man said that Accident Fund Insurance Company of America had a spy camera placed on his property illegally.

Robert Guzanek said a private investigation firm placed the camera to spy on his neighbor, Dana Fredericks, who has filed a disability claim at work for a badback. However, Guzanek said the company illegally installed the battery-operated surveillance camera in a clearing where workers cut into his hedgerow. He said his neighbors witnessed the installation. Apparently, a van and two individuals, were acting as if they were cable company employees who were checking for a signal, according to Guzanek.

“It’s big brother watching down on you without your knowledge,” Guzanek said.

Fredericks was upset about the camera, too and said, ”I’m totally offended. “I just can’t believe in America that somebody could get away with it. I’d even feel better if it was the government.” Read the full article »
