I am always shocked at how much personal information people are willing to share on their social sites, but seriously, this is definitely a case of TMI (too much information).

An 18-year-old Pittsburgh man is accused of burglarizing a market with three teens, then posting pictures on his Facebook page showing the suspects posing with some of the loot.

Isaiah Cutler has been in jail since last Friday for the Dec. 12th burglary.

Police say 17-year old Cutler and two 14-year-olds stole more than $8,000 worth of cash, cigarettes, candy, and checks from the business. About an hour later, police say, Cutler posted pictures of the teens posing with the loot on his page on the social networking site.

Well, I guess they’re just stupid kids,” Detective Valerie Milie said Monday. “They thought they could put (the pictures) out there for their friends who friended them on Facebook to see. But the one kid had 200 friends, but not only were they friends, some of them were relatives who became concerned and called police.”

Police were already tracking down the teens based on the Facebook photos and the surveillance video from the store by the time the parents determined what happened, Milie said.

The younger suspects have been charged in juvenile court and have been released to their parents.

Cutler faced a preliminary hearing yesterday on charges of theft, burglary and conspiracy.

Would-Be Thief Gets a Surprise Punch

By Dawn in Crime, MSI Detective Services, Mug Shots, robbery at December 28th, 2011 | No comments

A would-be thief tangled with the wrong man. 25-year-old Mostafa Hendi walked into the the We Buy Gold shop in North Carolina yesterday and demanded money from the clerk. The clerk, Derek Mothershead, wasn’t taking any gruff.

After reaching to give the armed robber the cash, Mr Mothershead gave him something else - an unexpected punch, knocking him to the floor. Surveillance camera footage caught the moment.

“When he came through the door, he told me had a gun and he even flashed it,” Mr. Mothershead said. I stood up and threw my hands up and said, “Take the money.”

The thief came behind the counter and Mothershead went to pass him cash from a drawer.

“When he reached out, I took a step in, I cocked back and preloaded and I hit him hard,” Mothershead said.

When the thief came to, the clerk forced him to mop up his own blood from the shop floor with paper towels and cleaner.

Mothershead also grabbed the man’s weapon, but said he laughed when he realized it was just a pellet gun.

Paramedics took the man away on a stretcher and Mr. Mothershead’s handywork can be seen in Hendi’s police mugshot, where his face looks bruised and swollen.

He remains behind bars on a charge of attempted robbery with a dangerous weapon.

Store manager Juaz Cruz added: “Merry Christmas Mostafa Hendi.”

Anonymous Leaks 38,000 Investigator E-Mails

By Dawn in Crime, Debugging - Electronic Countermeasures, Electronic Fraud, Electronic Theft, Hacking, MSI Detective Services, Technology at December 5th, 2011 | No comments

Law enforcement officers and white hats working for the government or for private companies contracted by the government are among the favorite targets of hacking collective Anonymous, and the latest one to be targeted was Fred Baclagan, a Special Agent Supervisor of the CA Department of Justice (DOJ) in charge of computer crime investigations.

The hacker group Anonymous released 38,000 private e-mails belonging to the retired special agent supervisor and cybercrime investigator.

The messages reveal detailed information about computer forensic techniques and investigation protocols, the group said in a notice posted to Pastebin. Anonymous also said it leaked several dozen of Baclagan’s voicemails and SMS text message logs, along with his personal phone number and address. They claim to have hacked into and hijacked two of his Gmail accounts, accessed several dozen voicemails and SMS text message logs, his Google web history, listened to private voicemails and used his Google voice account.

“Possibly the most interesting content in his e-mails are the IACIS.com internal e-mail list archives (2005-2011) which detail the methods and tactics cybercrime units use to gather electronic evidence, conduct investigations, and make arrests,” said the group.

“There are discussions about using EnCase forensic software, attempts to crack TrueCrypt encrypted drives, sniffing wireless traffic in mobile surveillance vehicles, how to best prepare search warrants, and subpoenas, and a whole lot of clueless people asking questions on how to use basic software like FTP.”

“The information in these e-mails will prove essential to those who want to protect themselves from the techniques and procedures cybercrime investigators use to build cases,” Anonymous said. The group invited anyone who has ever been arrested for computer crimes to check the archives for discussions about their case.

If you suspect your computer, email or phone has been hacked, MSI Detective Services provides computer forensic investigations and debugging services that will detect and eliminate suspicious software.

In addition, the U-Spy Store sells surveillance computer and phone products that assist in monitoring the activities of your computers and phones.

Twenty-Two Things Burglars Won’t Tell You

By Dawn in Burlary, Home Security, MSI Detective Services, Safety, Stolen Property at November 23rd, 2011 | No comments

Have you ever wondered what factors a burglar considers when deciding which homes to target? Some of these things may surprise you.  This list comes from a Texas based security company that is taking steps to educate its customers. The list takes a humorous approach to giving end users some insight into the diverse and sometimes surprising forms a burglar can take, the indicators of wealth burglars pick up on, and how they know no one is home, among others.

The list highlights the importance of supplementing a dependable security system with a deeper awareness of seemingly harmless visitors and how a residence or business can attract a burglar’s attention. Hopefully, it will give you some tips to avoid being a victim of theft or something worse.

In addition to having a good security system, you may want to consider adding surveillance cameras to the outside of your home. There are also cameras that use motion detection which then turns on a flood light. A burglar is not going to go past this first line of defense. If a flood light comes on, they will run. Personally, I want to stop anyone from even attempting to breach my home security system. I know that with some home systems, if a door or window is opened when the system is armed, the panel box “beeps” for sixty seconds before alarms are set off. Then, you receive a call from the security company, and if you don’t answer, they call your back-up number. If no one answers at the back-up number, it is only then that the police are notified. Therefore, it could take 10-15 minutes at best before the police are at your door.

I accidentally set off my alarm in the middle of the night one time and punched in my code once to turn it off. I was actually supposed to punch in my code twice if the alarm is accidentally set off. I didn’t have my phone turned on, was in a sleepy stupor and returned to bed. The police showed up an hour later. I did not find that experience to be very comforting and even sixty seconds seems like a long time to me before alarms are set off. An intruder can do a lot of harm to you in that short amount of time if they aren’t scared off by your beeping sound. Many home invasions are committed by people on drugs who are not thinking logically – like they should run when they hear your alarm box beeping.

Here is that list: Read the full article »
