CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. — A Tennessee woman has found a unique use for her Facebook account: reporting a robbery.

Chattanooga Police said 20-year-old Rolanda Hill answered a knock at her door Sunday night and a man stuck a gun through the open door and forced his way inside. He demanded money while holding Hill at gunpoint and took cash and her cell phone.

Deprived of her phone, Hill used her computer to report the crime to her Facebook friends and asked them to call police. Someone did and police responded at about 9:30 p.m.

Police are following up leads, but there was no immediate arrest in the robbery.

Murder of Philly man may be connected to Facebook “hit”

By alisa in court cases, Crime, Investigations, murder at August 17th, 2011 | No comments

When Corey White’s family saw a Facebook post from White’s child’s mom, London Eley, saying: “I will pay somebody a stack to kill my baby father,” they called police and had her arrested.

Timothy Bynum commented on the post saying: “Say no more … what he look like … where he be at … need that stack 1st.” He was also arrested.

A Philadelphia judge on Monday upheld felony charges against the pair, who’ve been detained since their June arrest.

On Monday, coincidentally (or not), Corey White was shot dead on a southwest Philadelphia street. Eley was still in custody on the night White was shot.

Man steals 57K from neighbors by utilizing their Facebook info

By alisa in Crime, Electronic Fraud, Electronic Theft, Security, Technology at August 16th, 2011 | No comments

Iain Wood used freely shared info such as birthdays, maiden names of mothers and other personal details from his neighbor’s Facebook and UK social network to bypass security questions on bank account websites which scored him 57k.

Wood — who reportedly had a gambling habit that needed financing — friended the cohabitants of his apartment complex on Facebook and Friends Reunited. Equipped with the real identities Facebook and other social networks are so insistent upon, Wood tried out the names on a variety of online banking sites. When Wood got a hit, he took a ride through the “forgot your password?” links, using the info he collected from his “friends” to bypass security questions (such as “what is your mother’s maiden name?).

Man taunts cops via Facebook; arrested in front of computer

By alisa in harassment, Wanted at July 29th, 2011 | No comments

29-year-old Victor Burgos still had his Facebook page open when a task force of U.S. marshals and NYPD detectives arrived at his Brooklyn apartment. The man was placed under arrest and taken to Oneida County where he is facing charges related to domestic violence and harassment of his ex-girlfriend.

Before his arrest, Burgos posted messages via Facebook such as “Catch me if you can, I’m in Brooklyn,” and he even posted a video of him walking into an unidentified NYPD stationhouse.

There’s no explanation as to what Burgos’ motivation was and whether he genuinely believed that he could continue with his online antics without getting caught eventually. All Utica police sergeant Steve Hauck had to say about the incident is that “He told us via Facebook to come and get him and we did.”
