Illinois left as only state to withhold concealed carry ban

By alisa in Illinois at June 24th, 2011 | No comments

Wisconsin is set to become the 49th state in the nation to legalize concealed carry, leaving Illinois as the only state left to withhold the ban.

The Wisconsin House and Senate both passed the bill, which will allow citizens to carry concealed handguns, with bipartisan support. The measure now goes to Wisconsin Governor Scott Walker for his signature.

The legislation requires residents to obtain a permit, unlike states like Alaska, Wyoming, Arizona, and New Hampshire where citizens can carry open and concealed handguns without a permit.

Governor Pat Quinn says it’s unlikely that Illinois will allow concealed carry anytime soon. Legislation to legalize carry concealed handguns in Illinois was voted down in May.

Social Media + Mobile = Stalking Clues

By admin in Chicago, Crime, Illinois, Investigations, MSI Detective Services, Privacy, Safety, Security, stalking, Technology, technorati, Violence at January 23rd, 2011 | 1 comment

stalkbookThink that posting a picture on a social media website could put you in danger? Not danger like getting in trouble with family, friends, or an employer, but physical danger?

For even the poorest of cyber stalkers, it’s not that difficult to determine where someone lives based on their Facebook profile alone; indeed, there are many pictures on social media websites that show people standing if front of their homes, cars, workplaces, etc. With location-based sites added to the mix, every time you “check in” some place means that you’re saying, “I am not at home. I am here,” providing crooks vital information.

While no one wants to come home and find that their home has been burglarized, there are worse things that can happen…

Did you know that smartphones use metadata and GPS stamps to “tag” digital photos that encode Lat & Long coordinates into the image? Tags that, in essence, reveal the exact location a photo was taken? What if that picture was taken in your living room?

If you post that picture online, Ben Jackson, co-founder of the site ICanStalkU.com, says that someone can find out where you are instantly if they know how.

According to an interview on FoxNews.com, the site monitors Twitter and uses Google maps to determine when, and where, random people are located. The site shows the picture, the Tweet, and the location of numerous people in real time. The side has tracked over 50,000 different photos using geotags in 90 days.

The pictures provide “breadcrumbs,” or bits of information that aid navigation, that can provide unwanted intruders information regarding places people are likely to go.  Jackson said that they analyze data for patterns and are able to discern “where your house is, where you may work, what your favorite haunts may be, a coffee shop, restaurant, a place that you like to go to like a club of some sort. We can then piece those together and say, ‘hey, look at that. Every Friday night they like to go to this bar over on Main Street.’”

Criminals can use this data, combined with other information, to stalk victims or even burglarize homes. As the online technology becomes widespread, criminals using the Internet to commit crimes is expected to skyrocket, as the crooks are no longer required to seek opportunity, but just need for someone to deliver it them.

Who’s Lying? It’s Debatable Tonight on Fox News Chicago!

By MSI in MSI Detective Services at October 14th, 2010 | No comments

Tonight is the big debate between current Illinois Govern Patrick Quinn and challenger Bill Brady which will air on Chicago’s Fox 32 News at 8pm.   Illinois is fortunate that we come from a state that has the most honest politicians.  But just in case,  we all will be watching and listening while I spend my time focusing on the candidates facial expressions, hand gestures, breathing, skin tone and heart rate as best as possible.  Unless someone is wearing a full suit of armor, I should be able to formulate an opinion.  After the debate, Fox news has graciously invited me to offer my opinion live.

After years of experience and much training, I am considered an expert in body language and should be able to tell you some good observations.  Training in interrogation offers some great insight into human behavior and allows us to see lies without even hearing the words.  It’s nearly impossible for a person to quell their physical body functions such as breathing, heart rate, perspiration as well as facial and body gestures controlled by the nervous system.

While a court of law would not allow these opinions, it is a widely accepted fact that the body usually does not lie.  I say usually as their are some reasons a person can appear nervous and may not be lying.  Afraid of cameras, public speaking, lack of knowledge are a few of the many reasons someone can appear nervous in the bright lights of a camera.  Keep in mind that this is not an interrogation where a trained person can ask the questions.  These questions are well expected and candidates have hopefully practiced before tonight to put their best foot forward and hopefully not in their mouth.

So tune in tonight or check for the replay on the Fox Chicago News Website if you read this too late. Let’s see whose pants are on fire or whose nose grows disproportionate to their face during questioning.

Care Trak Helps Locate the Lost

CareTrakIn a story from the Daily Herald, Buffalo Grove Police in Illinois announced Care Trak, a new program that will enable them to track, and find, persons with special needs if they go missing during a city council meeting last week.

The system uses radio transmitters to “find individuals with Alzheimer’s, autism, Down syndrome and similar disabilities who may have wandered away. It is available to residents who meet the guidelines, which include having a full-time caregiver.”

Families who meet a “needs assessment” can buy the transmitters–about the size of a standard wrist watch–and secure it to the wrist or ankle of family members. Once attached and activated, the transmitter sends out a signal, which will allow police to locate individuals who are missing.

Once notified, police can use directional tracking devices to locate the missing individual; the range of the signal varies, about a mile on the ground or five from an aircraft.

According to the Daily Herald, sixteen departments in Northern Illinois use the system, including Schaumburg, Crystal Lake and Naperville. It has assisted in more than 2,000 rescues.
