‘Please Help Me’: Ex-FBI Agent Kidnapped in Iran Says

By Dawn in Locate Investigations, Missing Persons, Missing Persons Investigations, MSI Detective Services, Private Investigator, Terrorism at December 9th, 2011 | No comments

Visiting Iran, in whatever capacity, is always a huge risk considering how many Americans and citizens of other countries have been held hostage there.

You may recall the recent release of two American hikers from an Iranian prison in September. They were lucky, but former FBI Agent Robert Levinson has been missing after a visit to Iran for nearly five years now. The U.S. worked behind the scenes to secure the release of the hikers but officials said Levinson was not part of those discussions.

In the nearly five years that Levinson has been missing, the U.S. government has never had solid intelligence about what happened to him. Levinson had been retired from the FBI for years and was working as a private investigator when he traveled to Iran in March 2007. His family has said an investigation into cigarette smuggling brought him to Kish, a resort island where Americans need no visa to visit.

Long after he vanished in Iran, retired FBI agent Robert Levinson reappeared in a video and a series of photographs sent to his family over the past year, transforming a mysterious disappearance into a hostage standoff with an unknown kidnapper, The Associated Press has learned.

In the video emailed to his family in November 2010, Levinson pleaded with the U.S. government to meet the demands of his unidentified captors.

“I have been treated well. But I need the help of the United States government to answer the requests of the group that has held me for three and a half years,” Levinson says. “And please help me get home.”

The 54-second video showed Levinson looking haggard but unharmed, sitting in front of what appeared to be a concrete wall. He had lost considerable weight, particularly in his face, and his white shirt hung off him. There were no signs of recent mistreatment. But Levinson, who has a history of diabetes and high blood pressure, implored the U.S. to help him quickly.

“I am not in very good health,” he says. “I am running very quickly out of diabetes medicine.” Read the full article »

FBI Arrests Four Hackers Hired to Infiltrate AT&T

By Dawn in Crime, Debugging - Electronic Countermeasures, Hacking, Investigations, MSI Detective Services, scam, Technology at December 6th, 2011 | No comments

Earlier this year, the FBI discovered a Saudi group had funded hackers to target AT&T. The FBI enlisted the help of the Philippine’s Criminal Investigation and Detection Group’s (CIDG) International cyber-crime division (ATCCD) to investigate the attack. The group was suspected of having ties to terrorist organizations, although details were never officially disclosed.

Earlier last week, AT&T claimed to be investigating an intrusion attempt on its system. However, the company said it did not believe any accounts were compromised. Reports are now surfacing that AT&T has been working with the FBI and Philippine law enforcement to apprehend attackers, although a link between the two events has not been confirmed.

The CIDG stated, “The hacking activity resulted in almost $2 million in losses incurred by the company,” referring to AT&T’s involvement as a target of the attack.

An AT&T spokeswoman, Jan Rasmussen, denied any breach of security by claiming, “AT&T and its network were neither targeted nor breached by the hackers. AT&T only assisted law enforcement in the investigation that led to the arrest of a group of hackers.”

Jan Rasmussen’s statement seems to directly contradict the earlier statement by the CIDG and another statement by AT&T saying the company, “ended up writing off some fraudulent charges that appeared on customer bills.” Given these contradictions, it is impossible to determine to what extent AT&T’s network was hacked, if at all.

The four men arrested were Filipino and funded by a group formerly headed by Muhammad Zamir, a South East Asian militant. Zamir has a colorful history with financial ties to Al Qaeda and funding the terrorist bombing of Mumbai, India on November 26, 2008. One of the men detained was identified as Paul Michael Kwan, a suspect previously convicted of illegal militant activity in 2007.

The CIDG said suspects hacked PBX lines from various telecommunications companies to steal money and divert it into the bank accounts of terrorists. The hackers were to be paid commission, based upon how much money they could funnel to accounts.

$9M Richer, Informant Unmasks Himself at NY Trial

By Dawn in Crime, Investigations, MSI Detective Services, testimony at November 18th, 2011 | No comments

The star witness at the trial of an ex-Soviet officer, Victor Bout, known as the “Merchant of Death” was a former drug dealer turned U.S. government-sponsored actor who became one of the highest paid informants in history. The picture to the left is that of Victor Bout.

Carlos Sagastume, 40, earned more than $9 million over 15 years by convincing drug dealers and a weapons merchant that he was the real deal. He portrayed himself as a guy even meaner and uglier than those he was working with in his undercover role. Well, he did have some experience.

Sagastume collected a mountain of evidence against Viktor Bout. He posed as a member of the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia, also known as the FARC, to coax Bout to travel from Russia to Thailand in March 2008 to arrange to send deadly weapons to Colombian rebels to fight Americans.

The month long trial in federal court in Manhattan ended on November 2, with Bout’s conviction on conspiracy to kill Americans and US officials, to aid a terrorist organization and to deliver anti-aircraft missiles. The arms dealer was an inspiration for the character played by Nicolas Cage in the 2005 film “Lord of War.” Bout faces a potential life sentence.

Sagastume made most of his millions through the State Department’s Narcotics Rewards Program, collecting $7.5 million from two rewards for work he did for the Drug Enforcement Administration. He earned another $1.6 million through work on 150 investigations, though some of the money covered expenses. He was paid $250,000 for the Bout probe. In all, the State Department has paid more than $62 million in rewards since Congress established the program in 1986 to reward individuals who provide information to help arrest and convict drug dealers. Saudi Family in Fla. Part of 9/11?

By Dawn in Investigations, MSI Detective Services, Politics, Security, Terrorism at September 20th, 2011 | No comments

A news report about a Saudi family that disappeared from their home in Sarasota, Fla., just two weeks before the 9/11 attacks has brought an angry response from the co-chair of a congressional Sept. 11 committee. A former senator from Florida, Bob Graham, who also co-chaired the panel at the time he was senator, says he contacted President Barack Obama’s terrorism adviser after hearing about the news report, that reported the family had had contact with three of the 9/11 pilot hijackers.

“I … urged him to pursue an investigation of these matters, both in Sarasota and elsewhere … and then hopefully release that information to the American people,” Graham said Monday on The Dylan Ratigan Show, suggesting that other Saudi families in the U.S. might have also had contact with the terrorists, most of whom were Saudi.

The FBI office in Tampa issued a statement Monday saying the Sarasota case was one of many leads that “were resolved and determined not to be related to any threat nor connected to the 9/11 plot.” Graham said he had no reason to doubt the news report, which said the couple and their two children abruptly abandoned their luxury home, leaving behind a full refrigerator, clothes, furnishings and a new car in the driveway. However, if true, it reveals another Saudi terrorism connection that the FBI never disclosed to the public or to the 2002 joint Congressional intelligence committee investigating the attacks, said Graham.
